Following the French Model…

… Austrian university students are striking to make sure that their higher education system remains lurid and open to all.

There’s not much coverage of events in the English-language press yet, but here’s a blog post with a video and some background.

It isn’t clear from the press coverage, but the main issue (unlike in France) is that Austria has mandatory military service for young men, which can be avoided only through the successful pursuit of a university degree (with only very narrow exceptions, such as joining the priesthood).

Under the current system, and even more so under the proposed future system, a low score on one or two exams leads unavoidably to six months of boot camp.

Lurid and open to all? I will try to get hired at Ole Vienna U ASAP.

I’m told it leaves nothing to the imagination, Jonathan.
