Back in the good old days of the cold war, lots of kids in the US grew up thinking it was important to learn Russian (Condi Rice, for example). That someone should be derided or dismissed today for having learned Mandarin is, in a word, idiotic.
Our countrymen are going insane, but what else is new?
The only people who seem to be negatively worked up are pundits and other politicians. I bet plenty of ordinary people think a second language would be useful for a president.
Surely TOTUS must have studied some foreign language at Occidental or Columbia? Isn’t his degree supposedly a BA in poli sci with a specialization in international relations?

And our supposedly brilliant Current Occupant with the peripatetic childhood and polyglot home state? Knows no foreign language.

So doesn’t that redound to his credit, according to current Republican thinking?
