Raking through leaves and deer pellets…

… along various backyard paths I’ve
made, I discovered one of these:

(I found this cleaned-up button here.
Mine is soaking in soap and
warm water.).

It’s a vintage Post Office Department
button, dating anywhere from the late
nineteenth century to 1940.

Here’s one in the Postal Museum.

Hmmm… does this solve the mystery of the missing mailman, mauled by antlered deer in the Thesda woods? What other unsolved maulings might there be?

adam: Believe me, Les UDs have considered that, and many other, scenarios.

Cool! I’ve got my grandfather’s WWI Army Corps of Engineers uniform, which has wonderful buttons, with what look like castles on them. Whatever else one might say about the Army Corps, at least in its present incarnation (and I could say a lot), they had cool buttons c. WWI.
