… is that the school remains – even after Paterno-Sandusky – almost exclusively about sports. Penn State truly seems incapable, even after all it’s still going through, of being a university. It’s as if the citizens of Moscow were still spending most of their time arguing about whether the city should take down a statue of Leonid Brezhnev.

The funny thing is that a sportswriter for the Harrisburg Patriot-News quotes O’Brien complaining about the JoeBots in early December. No link, but you can search for David Jones, the writer’s name, at the paper’s site: http://pennlive.com

What else is to be expected from an alumni/fan base that made pilgrimages to Joe Paterno’s house in order to pray on his front lawn? Of a student body that rioted when he was fired, that can’t seem to understand that their school is close to losing accreditation, due to those connected to the institution doing nothing when Sandusky was at his worst.

“..the school remains – even after Paterno-Sandusky – almost exclusively about sports….”
Well, no, it’s not, but don’t allow reality to get in the way of the narrative.

GTWMA: Of course you’re correct. I routinely exaggerate for effect, as you know. Still, I think it’s true that the news out of Penn State remains remarkably sports-related, whereas it’d be a lot more becoming if the place could figure out a way to seriously switch its attention away from the subject.
