As in Michigan, we see here the deleterious effect of having trustees elected by constituencies (alumni, the public) whose main ongoing connection to a university may be as football fans.

GTWMA: Correct. I’ve come to believe, over the course of writing this blog, that there is in fact no way to get good trustees. All forms of appointment, voting in, crony-recommendation, whatever, produce a wretched outcome. There’s something intrinsic to boards of trustees that makes them laughingstocks.
