Margaret’s Nature Journal

A female downy woodpecker
was just now pecking at
my frozen-over birdbath.

downy

Tiny bits of ice flew up
as it pecked. It made a
small hole and drank water
from it.

Nice. Reminds me, I’ve got various means of presenting a heated birdbath to my winter residents. Ought to put something out real soon since all is now frozen.

I had one at my suet feeder today, and juncos, goldfinches and chickadees at the thistle feeder. Need to get the heater into the birdbath soon. Now that all is frozen and there is snow on the ground, a bit of water will be appreciated.
