In the early 2000s–the Paleozoic, I guess–I attended my first “state of the university” talk delivered by the new president of our local Podunk Tech. Didn’t know what to expect.
“How do we get more foreign students?”, was the first question posed by a senior prof.
I shoulda guessed right then there was something else going in the academy besides updates on Plato.

I was on the adjunct faculty of a private college a few years ago (not the one I am at now) and they heavily recruited overseas. I always thought that if you travel 9,000 miles to get an education, you are probably serious. Maybe things have changed but the overseas students tended to be the best students in the class.
