Trump, by the end of the night, was left complaining to reporters about alleged problems with his microphone, which he suggested may have been sabotaged. Top surrogate Rudy Giuliani told a reporter Trump should pull out of future debates if moderators didn’t agree to be more deferential.

This is one of the oldest tricks in the sound engineer’s prank book, UD–turn up the gain on the microphone, the usual goal being to make it seem that someone is a heavy-breathing perv. It’s surprising that Trump’s people were not on the look-out for it. It seems to me that this is ancient enough to have been pulled on Joe McCarthy back in the 1950s by some reporter for CBS.

tp: The Wash Post does confirm problems with the mic; they seem, however, to have been confined to the sound in the hall itself.
