I had a friend, Gary, who was forced into alcohol rehab to keep his job. “JackOH, I want to apologize for my behavior a while back,” he said to me earnestly, doing his rehab thing. Gary was a good guy but something of a BS artiste. I replied, “Gary, this is Podunk Valley, why stay sober?” We both laughed.
He actually recovered from some pretty serious alcoholism, his bad family situation got squared away, and he moved on to a much better job.

JackOH: A version of what you told that guy was said over virtually the entire landmass of the Soviet Union back in the day.
