Absolutely. Lots of women are compelled to veil themselves; they need to see high-profile women around the world refusing to. It might help.

    don’t think this gesture by Le Pen is likely to empower Muslims in France or elsewhere, ya know history/context and all…

    dmf: I’m not certain of that. More broadly, a high-profile politician refusing to veil gets a lot of attention and moves the discussion about types/degrees of veiling forward.
