‘CAL IS FUCKED BECAUSE OF ITS STUPID STADIUM DEAL’
The [University of California – Berkeley] stadium debt is so large that funding may have to come out of the school’s non-athletics budget soon. The school’s largest donors donate to both the school and the athletics programs, and any disruption of sports could decrease the overall amount of donations.

True, but hardly breaking news. This has been evident for years. A large part of the cost IIRC was a safety issue, because the stadium straddles a fault in earthquake country. Even so – this episode shows that even a school that’s already in a power conference can go badly wrong overspending on football.

CAL”s stadium buildout never made sense. The school doesn’t need sports to attract admits, foreign students are a very large element of surprise he student body, so why this admin obsession with football? Or might this be nothing more than Wall Street bond palace capture of the regents?

Foreign students are a large element of the student body. Not surprise. Damn auto correct….
