IN THE PENAL COLONY "[Martha] Stewart clearly feels battered by her transformation from American icon to convicted felon, an ordeal she has characterized, at various times, as 'a small personal matter blown out of all proportion,' 'an almost fatal circus event,' and 'this fucking mess.' Yet in the course of our conversation I sense that she also feels redemption in the aftermath of her experience at the penal colony. 'I felt very close to Kafka during parts of this ordeal.
