UD is...
"Salty." (Scott McLemee)
"Unvarnished." (Phi Beta Cons)
"Splendidly splenetic." (Culture Industry)
"Except for University Diaries, most academic blogs are tedious."
(Rate Your Students)
"I think of Soltan as the Maureen Dowd of the blogosphere,
except that Maureen Dowd is kind of a wrecking ball of a writer,
and Soltan isn't. For the life of me, I can't figure out her
politics, but she's pretty fabulous, so who gives a damn?"

UD's First Day of the Spring Semester

I gave a lecture on the amazing literary
achievement of the Irish in the twentieth century.

Then I took my Ellmann book on Yeats
and went to Teaism for lunch.

(Note Ellmann book in foreground.)

It was a pleasantly overcast day,
and Teaism was dark and cozy.
Here's the Yeats book again, next
to my chai.

When I got home to Garrett Park,
I stopped to photograph the town
maintenance man sawing through
the tree that fell on the train tracks
near my house. It happened during a
big wind storm the other night.

Whew! There. If Ann Althouse
can do it, so can I.
