‘Prior to his election as president, Carruthers openly questioned whether NMSU should drop to Football Championship Subdivision status or even consider dropping football. He’s since reconsidered. “One of the pleasant things about being president is that I have a board of regents to turn to for guidance,” Carruthers said with a chuckle. “One of the first suggestions the regents gave me was, ‘Don’t talk about anything but (Football Bowl Subdivision) for our football program.’ I got the message.”’

The degradation of being president of hopeless-loser New Mexico State University.

Pure insanity. Or maybe, pure avarice and self interest. Someone is making some big money on the athletic buildouts, guessing it’s the very same people on BOT who told the college President not to touch the football program.

If you haven’t traveled to New Mexico, I would suggest you do, just to get some idea of how dead ass broke the state has become. Most academic metrics place it near the bottom of the nation. But yet, the school cannot look to compete academically, that’s simply impossible, given that the general population could care less about the educational quality of its land grant university. So, rather than try to lure better professors and upgrade academics, the school and its alumni try to pretend that a good football team somehow makes up for the scholastic mediocrity. Not to mention making a buck in the Quixotian endeavor.
