One Response to ““Allowing a student access to a laptop in class would be the worst thing to hit public education since the No Child Left Behind Act.””

  1. D. McConeghy Says:

I can’t say I’m much impressed by the argument of “save me because I can’t exercise any self control.” Is this student equally vigilant about writing love notes? Taking a nap? Reading something for another class? Doing the crossword?

There’s a simple fix here. The instructor says, “Turn off your wireless connections now, please.” And if they really need the connection students can be instructed to turn them back on. This is the same thing as reminding students to turn off their cell phones.

Time to own up to your own responsibility for your learning–not to harp on your inability to stay focused for 90 minutes without checking your email.
