I rail against the onlining of the university experience…

… but, to be fair, there’s one place in the university where direct contact between student and instructor still thrives — and will always thrive.

It will thrive as long as the mythic name of Bobby Knight continues to be part of our national lexicon. University coaches from Kansas to Iowa to Texas to Oregon to Florida to your state! will always be out there demonstrating how nothing motivates a player like a direct kick in the ass, or a workout so sadistic it puts everyone in the hospital.

This story has, of course, generated the usual “anybody who criticizes the coaches is a wussy girl who doesn’t understand the need to make men manly.” The most sadly revealing so far, though, is this posting ostensibly from one of the hospitalized player’s facebook page, which was posted in the comments of the Iowa student newspaper’s first story on this affair. What does this say about what “student-athletes” think about what they’re doing at the university?

    Sorry, quote got lost:

    (From the Daily Iowan, 1/26/11)
To all of you who are acting like you know what is going on, you dont. So try not to write terrible things for all the world to see without having any knowledge of the situation. The coaches push the players to physical extremes to toughen body and mind. This has nothing to do with them being “student-athletes” most of these guys are on full time scholarships and are working tryouts for the NFL to make millions. Most would not be at Iowa if they werent playing football, it is their life and these workouts have happen every year in the winter, post break. They arent pushed physically as hard during season to stay fresh for Saturdays…
