A few years ago a much more automotively inclined friend insisted to me that our students cars are like what our friends drove in college — family hand me downs. Except that when we were in college in 1980-84 those were 1973 Corollas (the CATMOBILE) or 1975 Impalas.
Our students drive 3 year old Hummers. Last year’s Escalade. The occasional (new) Beetle.
Then last week I had a student of mine crawl past me (he was driving over the multiple speed bumps on the exit drive from the Arts Campus) in a Bentley.
Many of the faculty cars are ancient. The students seem to drive newer vehicles, but mostly lower-end makes. The interesting thing is that the white Lexus or gray BMW is no longer required for the senior administrators. Most still drive high-end cars, but in a nod to diversity, a greater range of makes and colors is permissible.

Don’t cry for me, Argentina.
