“In the waiting room of Kyle’s original child psychiatrist, children played with Legos stamped with the word Risperdal, made by Johnson & Johnson.”

As the beautiful toy that was Risperdal begins, gently, to tarnish, UD offers this valedictory.

RISPERDAL

Opus 1, No. 1
Margaret Soltan
ca. 2012
Tune: Mollys Abschied, Beethoven
(Play Sample to sing along.)

Risperdal! How sore my heart is aching!
Thoughts of the past
Upon my soul are breaking.
See the children laugh and play!
Blessings on you, J&J!
Whither have they fled, those joyous off-label days?

Biederman! Return from your long journey!
Save Risperdal
From federal attorneys!
Tell them of the joy and pleasure
Children felt beyond all measure!
Whither have they fled, those joyous off-label days?

    Awesome blog post,love it!

    My chorus line-Risperal reproached.
Same saga here as Eli Lilly Zyprexa.

Johnson and Johnson is a trusted brand we associate with babies.
Risperdal,Zyprexa,as well as the other atypical antipsychotics, are being prescribed for children, even though this is an unapproved, off-label use. An estimated 2.5 million children are now taking atypical antipsychotics. Over half are being given them for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, many of these foster children.
Weight gain, increases in triglyceride levels and associated risks for (life-long) diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Lilly made $65 billion on Zyprexa!

    Brilliant, Francofou. You too, UD.

There are about 40 million children in the US between 5 and 14. 2.5 million is about 6%. Rather a lot, I’d say. I’m guessing that boys are the big consumers here so call it 8% or 10% for them.

    Jesus.

I’m certain I was ADHD as a child. Fortunately for me, Sister Mary Redempta had a yardstick rather than anti-psychotics. The main effects were immediate and the side effects transient. I didn’t appreciate it at the time, but I do now.
