What’s doing at…

… Grambling State University?

“The athletics department runs at a $1 million-plus deficit on an annual basis. In the past we’ve taken those funds from the academic side and directed it toward athletics. This year (2012-13), we had to take it from auxiliary services — that’s student dining, the bookstore and dorms. We can’t do that again.”

  1. Mr Punch Says:

Grambling is one of a number of schools in a real bind over athletic funding. It’s a southern school with a strong football tradition – central to its identity – but it’s in Division 1AA with limited revenue, and the enrollment is 62% female, with Title IX implications. Under the circumstances, a $1 million deficit perhaps reflects good management.

We are considerably smaller than GSU, in D-I, and the admitted operational deficit (i.e., not including scholarships or the many dodges by which athletic spending is laid off on other areas) is around $2,500,000 annually with absolutely no improvement in sight. GSU looks great by comparison. It’s clear that our trustees will sell history and physics majors into slavery and burn the books in the library to heat the place in the winter before they get us out of D-I.
