“A fire set from trees ripped out of the landscape.”

It’s the details that get to you. That university students riot after football games and fuck up the neighborhoods unfortunate enough to lie near campus is obvious, routine. But that university students rip trees out of the ground – that Michigan State University students hacked trees to death and then jumped up and down on their limbs while burning them (enjoy the positively medieval imagery here) is, UD will admit, shocking. She’s been covering, for years, drunk students rioting after football games; but this new form of barbarism truly rivets her attention.

Pretty much what happens when you let just about anyone into college. As a former HS teacher, I knew that well over 1/2 of my students were too immature to be near a college, much less enrolled in one. The beer and circus business model adopted by most universities is to blame for the ridiculous and savage behavior of so many students….

Whatever happened to this generation’s supposedly green sensibilities?

On the other hand, in their defense, ’tis the season for the slaughter of evergreens (in which I participate, so I’m not pointing any fingers), and very similar-looking bonfires built of discarded Christmas trees will be perfectly acceptable in many places in a month or so. Still, ripping other peoples’ trees out of the ground, whether for decorative or conflagrative purposes, is frowned upon.
