It’s an obvious point, maybe, but with this latest list of most corrupt states…

UD will go ahead and make it again. The most corrupt states have, with a few exceptions, the most pathetic public university systems. Here’s the list:

1. Mississippi
2. Louisiana
3. Tennessee
4. Illinois
5. Pennsylvania
6. Alabama
7. Alaska
8. South Dakota
9. Kentucky
10. Florida

Think too of how many of these lucky finalists boast corrupt big-time sports programs, with Penn State lately leading the pack, of course.

But Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, and Florida are also University Diaries perennials.

In the linked article, one of the hallmarks of corrupt states ais the large number of public construction projects. Taxpayers can’t judge work quality, so contractors can get away with just about anything. Pretty much explains why we see so many useless public sports venues sprouting all over the country….

  2. Jack/OH Says:

Contracting entities used to have their own architects or engineers on site. Fiduciary duty, due diligence, possible formal legal requirements, etc. Contractors chafe, but it’s the quickest way to communicate necessary or desirable construction changes to the entity bankrolling the project.

If the construction project is a mixed-motives deal from the start . . . well.

I scanned the linked article’s front page. I’ll go with a 5% “corruption tax”. God knows the qualitative changes in institutional morale when it becomes known there’s something hinky and systemic going on.
