Dagblog
University Diaries. Hosted by Margaret Soltan, professor of English at George Washington University. Boy is she pissed — mostly about athletics and funding, the usual scandals — but also about distance learning and diploma mills. She likes poems too. And she sings.

But what is the long term path for college athletics? No school outside the power conferences makes real money selling t-shirts or DVDs (shows how long lawsuits take).
I suspect that college athletics is on a downslope with all of the winning being concentrated in a few schools in the power conferences and everyone else getting out of the business.

SD, our trustees recently made it crystal clear that they are prepared to see us go under rather than get out of D-1 and limit our athletic financial hemorrhaging. I suspect they are not alone. The reality won’t hit them until the agent for our bondholders shows up during a Castaways game and repossesses all the basketballs. We are gonna fight the good fight until the last library book has been burned to heat the building in the winter and the classroom buildings have been repurposed as mold incubators because of the leaking roofs.

theprofessor,
Many colleges have argued that they need an athletic program because of the Flutie Effect. However, I suspect that being in a non-power conference, being a door mat for the teams in the power conferences, and ever increasing student fees to apy for athletics will be a turn off for most students.
Let the jock sniffers gain admission to the 60 power conference schools and let everyone else get out of the business of college sports.
