They’re not being distracted by ‘technology’, they’re being distracted by gossip, game-playing, and buying stuff. Technology is just the intermediary.
As a side note, it’s interesting how the common meaning of the term ‘technology’ has narrowed down to just refer to ‘computer stuff’, and only a subset of computer stuff at that.
