‘Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, a social democrat who has enacted one of Europe’s strictest asylum policies, called on her fellow leaders to consider suspending Spain from the Schengen area, which allows free movement between 29 countries in Europe.’

The NYT coverage of immigration needs to evolve. Although its analysis of Ceuta acknowledges (see above) that way-lefty Denmark got way into anti-immigration all on its own, without being scared into it by the far right, the article’s headline is

EUROPE’S FAR RIGHT, ONCE MARGINAL, NOW SETS THE TONE ON SPAIN MIGRANT CRISIS

Denmark’s social democrats are close to implementing a ban on calls to prayer; they are radical on the burqa, and on hijabs in school. They are extremely vocal about the imperative of new arrivals to integrate into the culture of Denmark. Far from being far right politically, they are, in American terms, far left. And Denmark, as a sovereign country, is arguably more tone-setting on migration than perennially losing candidates like Farage and LePen. It would be wonderful if the NYT could give fear-mongering about a fascist right a break, at least as regards European immigration.
