Frost at Midnight

My Key Western Civ course isn’t complete without this notable denizen of the island… But I really can’t stand Robert Frost, and my effort to find ONE poem of his about which I can think of something to say is going very badly… Stay tuned.

I agree with you on Frost, UD. He feels a little too….something…sometimes. Direct? Hallmark-y?

How about "The Death of the Hired Man"?

  2. A different Jonathan Says:

    How about "The Silken Tent."

  3. Margaret Soltan Says:

AMAZING that you say that, Jonathan, because it’s the one Frost poem I really admire. Again, can’t say that I LOVE it, but every time I read it I’m nodding my head and saying “This is a spectacular poem.”

Okay. I’ll see if it’s online and see what I can do with it. Thanks.

What about "Once By the Pacific"?

  5. Margaret Soltan Says:

I’ll take a look at that one, too, johnshade. If it’s on line. Thanks.

    Once by the Pacific
    by: Robert Frost

The shattered water made a misty din.
Great waves looked over others coming in,
And thought of doing something to the shore
That water never did to land before.
The clouds were low and hairy in the skies,
Like locks blown forward in the gleam of eyes.
You could not tell, and yet it looked as if
The shore was lucky in being backed by cliff,
    The cliff in being backed by continent;
It looked as if a night of dark intent
Was coming, and not only a night, an age.
Someone had better be prepared for rage.
There would be more than ocean-water broken
Before God’s last Put out the Light was spoken.

Lending new meaning to the term "sea-monster".
