Thanks for the plug, UD! My blog will be getting off the ground again soon once my (new) students have to, you know, do their homework.
I’m finding this whole Conrad story fascinating. I just don’t know if the euphemism “n-word” can actually overwrite the word that it’s trying to overwrite. Can we ever utter a euphemism without hearing echoes of the disagreeable term?

Joe: You’re welcome.
Yeah – I just said to my husband, “This morning, the word ‘nigger’ is on everyone’s lips, thanks to this new edition of the Conrad story.”

I can’t believe this is not a parody. Are you sure it’s not just a postmodern commentary on bowdlerization of classic texts? Because OW MY HEAD STOP IT.

Is there a comparable edition of Firbank?

According to the Amazon.com reviews, this edition is from a conservative publishing house that has released it to mock political correctness. The editorial description seems to bear that out.

I knew it was from a conservative Christian press, but I was under the impression that they didn’t do it in a mocking spirit.
