UD’s Blogpal Roy Poses…

… at Health Care Renewal says most of what needs to be said about the latest university overcompensation story, this one at the University of Maryland.

Here’s the Baltimore Sun account, which includes a statement from Governor Martin O’Malley:

This is an outrageous case of excessive executive compensation in a public institution. This sort of ‘golden parachute’ has no place in the public sector.

Lucky Temple University now gets this retiree, who says he “completed the Program for Health Systems Management at Harvard University,” but I can’t find that program.

Sometimes he renders it lower case: program for health systems management.

I’m looking all over the School of Public Health at Harvard, but I can’t find it. Has it changed its name? What sort of degree was conferred? This is the closest thing I can find.

Again, the time to decide on terms of termination payments is *at the time the employment contract is signed*, not when the termination occurs. There may be limited discretion in the amount of the payment, but it shouldn’t be totally open to whatever someone feels like at the time.

Also, several of these stories suggest that there is a lot of confusion in many institutions re who has actual authority to approve what payments in what situations. Maybe Gov O’Malley could address this situation rather than just expressing outrage.

Could be one of those certificate or short term credit programs offered through the K-School or B-School. You may be giving him too much credit by assuming it’s based in the Public Health curriculum.

  3. Margaret Soltan Says:

I thought about that, Crimson05er. I suppose I should check out those web pages. But the name of the program doesn’t show up on Google in any Harvard connection…

UD, I found Programs for Health System Management (PHSM) under Retired HBS programs, here:

Thanks, Nancy! No wonder it was so hard to find…

  6. Roy M. Poses MD Says:

    Thanks for the link.

I wonder how Mr Notebaert is doing at Temple?

  7. Nancy Fruge Says:

Mr. NoteBaert has not endeared himself to Temple nurses. See
