“A degree is a degree,” said Nawab Aslam Raisani, the chief minister of Baluchistan Province and an ally of President Asif Ali Zardari. “Whether fake or genuine, it’s a degree. It makes no difference.”

Zardari (with whom UD spent an afternoon at Blair House many years ago when his wife Benazir Bhutto was visiting the United States), himself has a fake degree, like much of the Pakistani political elite.

I guess it’s always been a kind of tradition there, pretend credentials.

The Pakistani press has lately decided to make a story of it. You can see that Raisani up there is pissed.

I’m not sure that Mr. Raisani is wrong.
A degree is a certificate of completion (of payment). It is an unreliable indicator of education, training, or intelligence.
Many of your posts illustrate this reality.
Students are well aware of the cynical manipulation they undergo, and one understands why they will spend the smallest amount of time, energy, and money to get the best certificate they can.
Even worse is the increasing realization that the certificate itself is practically meaningless and therefore worthless, except for the expensive degree from prestigious institutions that allows admission to exclusive clubs.
The fault lies squarely with the faculty: if we were convinced of the value of our teaching, we would not put up with the outrageous nonsense foisted upon us.
