This is pretty sad. And I’ve posted on it:

President Bruininks Tries the Old Quarterback Sneak on Alcohol in The House That Bob Built

“See, he’s doing it for the children…

Bob, you should be ashamed of yourself. This scholarship business is just a “tax” that you are willing to pay in order to generate more revenue for the football program. Admit it, please, and cut out this charade.

We are not stupid. You propose to hand over about 20% to the students for scholarships it appears. 300K/1.5 mil = 20%.

Retire the debt? Aren’t students already helping – involuntarily – to do this?

‘For shame!’ As my grandma used to say.”

  2. theprofessor Says:

If you are going to have alcohol, why not slot machines too? It would be for the chuuuldren, after all.

  3. Matt L Says:

don’t stop at slot machines.,, follow through and bring on the strippers. I am sure a lap dance surcharge would also bring in adequate revenue to retire the debt as well. Its not a tax, its a users fee…

  4. Red Stater Says:

You’re all being harsh on UM. You’d have to drink to watch their 1-7 football team.

  5. Margaret Soltan Says:

    Red Stater: LOL.

  6. Bill Gleason Says:

Actually, Matt L, I’ve already made that suggestion.

But per usual, UD beat me to the punch in one of her old posts:

“Surge in School Pride… as the University of Minnesota goes after a whole new class of stadium donors!” (old link dead)

Her post did the full monty on the Minnesota administration playing footsie with Schiek’s a downtown gentleman’s club. The U wanted wanted some payback. Visits to this establishment have been de riguer for student-athletes being wooed by the U.

I followed your suggestion to its logical conclusion:

Help BigU to Fill Twin City Federal Stadium! A Modest Proposal:
    Endowed Schieks Football Scholarships

But never fear, we will be spending a bazillion dollars for a new coach and everything will be fine. We’ve just fired another football coach, and now the Rose Bowl is again on the horizon. As our president put it:”My great aspiration is to put myself in the saddle and ride in the Rose Bowl parade” (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 2007)

    A man’s got to have his priorities…
