And U.D.’s own DeLillo sets part of Running Dog in D.C. Running Dog and London Fields don’t qualify as “D.C. novels,” but Hitchens is liberal in defining what he wants: “Think of the flower of our novelists—Updike, Mailer, Roth, Cheever, Bellow—and see if you can call to mind a single scene that is set on the banks of the Potomac.” DeLillo and Amis are certainly in that league (and Hitchens happens to be friends with one of them). London Fields actually contains the words “Du Pont Circle.” [sic] So…
