Richard Holbrooke…

… with whom UD‘s old friend Peter Galbraith worked on the peace accord when Peter was ambassador to Croatia, has died.

Peter always described Holbrooke as so hard-nosed a character that UD wondered how the two of them – Peter and Holbrooke – could be in a room together without the room imploding.

    The first 3 photographs in the montage on Politico to which you linked tell the story. Richard Holbrooke’s face bears the signature of chronic stress. The fancy new biomedical name for that is allostatic load. This is the price of passionate engagement in affairs of state. Ave atque vale, Richard Holbrooke.

    Yes. A number of friends of his have written that he in effect gave his life for his country.
