I beg to differ. The University of Pittsburgh, through its Chancellor, acted promptly and decisively to remove an embarrassment, saying in effect, to hell with the legal niceties, and dumping the guy. This is exactly what institutions need to do more often, as I discussed recently on Health Care Renewal.

I should have said more in this post. Why did Pittsburgh allow this to happen at all? Not only did they make an unpopular, and now obviously catastrophic, choice; they’re the sort of institution that’s so sports-centered that it means much too much.
I’m not sure we should applaud an institution that deals promptly with a new coach who beats up his girlfriend and goes to jail. Almost any institution – except for U Kentucky and Auburn, who seem to enjoy this sort of thing – would have done the same.
