It would be funny if it weren’t so sad. And the saddest thing is that many outsiders who have visited Ireland regularly since 2002 (e.g. Mr. and Mrs. Polish Peter, with their daughters, who both studied in Dublin) could see it coming down the pike. In 2004, I believe, the Irish Independent published a list of the 50 wealthiest people in Ireland (not sure how they measured “wealth”). Only one, the head of the Guinness brewery, owned a company that actually made something. The rest were all real estate developers and entertainers. And judging from the piece in today’s Wall Street Journal, Guinness is having its problems now as well.
