The Penn State Story has now become a Moynihan.

You remember Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s famous statement about some burning issue in the Senate: “Everything that has to be said has been said, but not everyone has said it.” So everybody’s saying it about Penn State. Everyone.

UD thought it might be timely for her to reprint, as it were, something she wrote back in 2006 for Inside Higher Education: THE FACULTY BENCH.

I don’t know if you’ve come across this yet, but John Amaechi, a former Penn State basketball player has a good response to this. It doesn’t really add anything but it is good to see an athlete with a thoughtful commentary and his point about athletes being used as pawns to entice children to seek support from Sandusky’s charity is, I think, important.

PSU’s Faculty Senate just approved a resolution calling for an independent investigation.

  4. Margaret Soltan Says:

    That’s good news, GTWMA.

  5. GTWMA Says:

It definitely is, UD. There have been many people pushing for Senate to address the situation. After an initial statement by the Senate Council, some senators began a petition for a resolution from the full Senate. That petition reached the critical mass needed (I think it’s 50) for an emergency session held today. While the result shows some of the usual weaknesses of writing by committee, it does have that key element.

    The full text is here:

The original petition called for support for the committee that the Board of Trustees had already established, as well as the creation of an independent committee. The final resolution only emphasizes the need for the latter.
