Oddly, Rutgers was one of the two teams which played the first intercollegiate football game sometime back in the 1850s. Its opponent was Princeton.

1869. Why is that odd? Rutgers ism, at least on paper, a colonial foundation, one of the ten oldest colleges in America. Rutgers won, too. The game was soccer. Rugby-based football was introduced five years later, at Harvard via McGill, and then the top colleges got together (on the anniversary of that Rutgers-Princeton game)and agreed to play by the same rules.
