So a band scandal’s gonna be an athletic scandal now? When a cheerleader shows up in Playboy’s “Girls of the PAC-10” is that gonna be an athletic scandal too?

Shane: This is the marching band, which exists because of and for athletics. What happened happened at a football game, and coverage of the scandal has focused upon the culture of sports (given FAMU’s 12% graduation rate, sports are pretty much all that’s happening there) at FAMU. As to cheerleaders – yes. They are a creature of athletics. Coaches do many things (give inspirational speeches at community events, etc.) but when they’re scandalous it’s an athletic scandal.
Note that Paterno’s final letter insists that Sandusky is not a football scandal.
