In the midst of these ongoing diatribes about the “football factories” it is odd you make no mention of the Morrill Acts that set up most of these football factory land grant institutions. By virtue of their charter they were designed to appeal to the common citizens of the state. And what is more common than sport?

David: If there’s one conclusion one can draw from the bulk of my coverage of big-time university football and basketball, it’s that this sort of sport is profoundly uncommon. You might even say grotesque.
