A Suicide at Columbia

People tend to be at their most fragile at the beginning of their freshman year. The transition can be overwhelming.

For some of the most fragile people, it can simply be too much.

    Really, really sad.

It would be worthwhile for someone to compare the incidence of suicide among new college students with the incidence of same among other people of similar ages away from home for the first time (military training, construction work in the Dakota oil fields, etc), also to compare various types of colleges (large vs small, for instance) and fields of study.

Although *hopefully* the sample sizes are too small to do too much of this.

david: I think I remember reading that suicide rates for people of that age who are NOT in college are higher.
