“They passed the phone around and congratulated me,” Mr. Kobilka said. “I guess they do that so you actually believe them. When one person calls you, it can be a joke, but when five people with convincing Swedish accents call you, then it isn’t a joke.”

One of the two recipients of the Nobel for chemistry describes The Phone Call.

UD suspects, though, that hearing five Swedish accents might have the opposite effect. Might make you think it’s just a more elaborate joke.

One hopes by “convincing” he meant “better than the Swedish Chef on the Muppets.” But I’m with you – I’d still think it was a joke.

  2. Margaret Soltan Says:

    Michael: LOL.

  3. david foster Says:

I had a woman working for me whose favorite holiday was April Fools Day. She would have been entirely capable of rounding up 5 people with convincing Swedish accents for joking purposes…

  4. Margaret Soltan Says:

david: Yes. If I heard Ja Sven that’s fine. Now pass the phone to Elof, and Elof, you pass it to Hak. I’d bust a gut laughing and hang up the phone.

  5. janet gool Says:

May I reccomend an Israeli film called “Footnotes”? It is about an Israeli academic who is notified by phone that he has won the Israeli Prize – then it turns out the prize was actually intended for his son! Some very funny scenes.

  6. Margaret Soltan Says:

janet: I’m pretty sure that I read a great review of this film in the NYT. I’ll try to see it – thanks for the reminder.
