The Inartful Tweet

More on Cardale Jones the truth-teller:

His tweet, if inartful and perhaps ill-advised, was actually correct on the merits: he was not given a scholarship to play school.

For background, go here.

“…It was like when I was at Rice in the 1970s, and the basketball coaching staff was alway scowling about how the 6′-11″ backup center was just exploiting them to get a Rice engineering degree, always sneaking off to the library to work on differential equations…”

While I won’t name names, a Leading Figure in my discipline is quite tall and played college basketball back in the day. When he showed up on campus, he was sent to the usual list of athlete-friendly professors. His coach asked him how classes were going, and our Leading Figure said “A’s in all of them, except I just can’t seem to get better than a B on anything I write for Professor Snodgrass.”

Coach to Professor Snodgrass: “How is Leading Figure doing?” Snodgrass: “Low post game looks good. Needs to work on the outside shot.”
Coach: “No, I meant in class.”
    Snodgrass: “Fine. He’s getting a B.”
Coach: “The professors who actually read his papers give him A’s.”

    The problem was then resolved.
