Wow. The chair of a department at the University of New Hampshire tampered with a colleague’s course evaluations.

That’s disgusting enough, but the email he sent about it (he doesn’t think he should be fired) is even more disgusting.

Turns out when he rewrote student comments he was “in a very dark and vulnerable place.”

Poor baby.

Hm. Things have been bumpy in that department for awhile.

Cue the “I’m not responsible for my actions because of the darkness and vulnerability” fauxpology in 3, 2, 1…

  2. Alan Allport Says:

I do like: “I do not believe my act represents my character.” Hey, this isn’t me; this is just, you know, the stuff I do.

  3. Margaret Soltan Says:

Joe: Fauxpology is a new one on me. Beautiful.

  4. Joe Fruscione Says:

UD: I wish I came up with it, but Urban Dictionary–arguably the Ur-source for newfangled words–already lists it.

It applies very well to politicians, celebrities, athletes, coaches, etc. who sort of apologize…but don’t really apologize.

A non-prof, I’m a higher ed-friendly, but what is it with the “Phil Donahue defense” you sometimes hear when Prof. Jones gets caught grabbing ass, cooking the books, or fudging the paperwork (the malicious, willful kind of fudging)? “I wasn’t in touch with my feelings”, “my sense of hurt overwhelmed my sense of judgment”, etc.

Come on folks, we out here in non-academe generally believe you folks are paid to have a standard of intellectual and moral integrity we in sweaty-collar land can’t quite afford.

  9. Margaret Soltan Says:

    Thanks, Tim. I’ll fix.

I’ve seen some cases of serious gnat-straining going into departmental reports of student evaluation data for promotion candidates, but I couldn’t imagine even these people changing the numbers! Wow is right.
