Guess you can throw a Hail Mary Pass in basketball too.

Football, basketball. Things are getting desperate.

I thank God I have the opportunity to be here and to work along a Hall of Fame coach like coach Williams.

What the hell. Might work.

    Three quick thoughts:

    1. AD Bubba, from the article: “I’ve been in college athletics since 1988. I can’t do the math on that…”

Sadly, this apparently also applies to many of his student-athletes.

    2. We need more people named Bubba associated with flagship state universities.

    3. I think the basketball equivalent of a Hail Mary Pass is Throwing Up a Prayer (which is or is not answered depending on the outcome of the shot).

  2. Margaret Soltan Says:

TAFKAU: I did extensive Google research on the basketball equivalent, and only came up with buzzer beater, which isn’t quite the same thing. And “throwing up a prayer” is I think also a football term.

Though given the way many people are saying they feel about UNC lately, any formulation with “throwing up” in it would be appropriate.

  3. TAFKAU Says:

Buzzer beater describes an act of heroism, rather than desperation. Michael Jordan nails a buzzer beater. Johnny Benchwarmer throws up a prayer.

And, you’re right, “throwing up” describes perfectly the appropriate reaction to anyone dragging God into a conversation about the “integrity” of North Carolina basketball.
