David Ridpath on Hurricane Katina

Rarely anything surprises me in college sports anymore but the massive recruiting scandal brewing near Churchill Downs may just replace the Albert Means story as the biggest recruiting scandal ever

What has allegedly transpired at the University of Louisville in its storied basketball program truly stands out even in the ugly seamy world of college athletic recruiting.

It seems to me that as a logical continuation of the “full cost of attendance” policies, paying for poon, alcohol, and drugs is the next step. Given that these are de-facto professional teams, do we want them entertained by amateur coeds or experienced professional strippers and prostitutes? Thank goodness that Pitino is laying the foundations (and whatever else) of the Next Big Thing in the NCAA!

tp: I have to say that it occurred to me – given how difficult it often is to control the extracurricular activities of players – that a coach or assistant coach might be very tempted to do what this guy apparently did. You can keep an eye on them this way.

I think we’ve probably reached a point when at the end of any superlative on these scandals we should just tack on “that we know about.” The biggest recruiting scandal ever . . . that we know about.
