Dagblog
University Diaries. Hosted by Margaret Soltan, professor of English at George Washington University. Boy is she pissed — mostly about athletics and funding, the usual scandals — but also about distance learning and diploma mills. She likes poems too. And she sings.

Inside the Hippocratic Oath there’s an obvious cautionary tale. America’s exceptionalist response to that is to heave more bazillions at the medical establishment. Unfortunately, this indictment seems another one of those closing the barn door after . . . deals.

JackOH: What I find fascinating about the Chicago case is the fact that the school must have known for years and years about this family. They took the money anyway and continue to take it.

UD, when you have been at the teat of DARPA, Dow/Monsanto, and co. for so long it’s sown into the DNA.

UD: the chair, Mr. Big, of our Podunk Tech’s affiliated foundation has been indicted once for bribery of public officials (charges dropped). He’s been publicly named numerous times in FBI transcripts related to civic corruption.
The public officials who’d been bribed by Mr. Big and pleaded out include the mayor of the city in which our Podunk Tech is located. I personally know the lead county investigator whose investigation into Mr. Big’s activities was “captured”/forestalled by the Cleveland (OH) FBI.
Mr. Big’s Dad was important enough to rate a NYT obit in which his (Dad’s) estate was estimated at $900 million.
Long story short: at some point you wanna throw up your hands. Why bother?

JackOH: I’m writing a long post about Trump and nihilism, so the question why bother is very much on my mind today.

The pro-Trump people I know personally can’t articulate a single reason why they support Trump. I suspect the Trump support is shallow and weak.
