As a callow high schooler, Oxy recruited me to play defensive back. As the article mentions, programs at that level of college athletics don’t offer sports scholies. But if they want you, they can easily find a way to get you, especially if the prospect has decent grades.

Oxy’s marketing strategy was premised on an outstanding liberal arts education and a renowned athletic program, especially true regarding football. For years, they were the preeminent football team in the SIAC, which was true when I was recruited and why my coach allowed them to approach a couple of my teammates and me. If Oxy is cancelling games, then the situation must be dire for smaller private universities. Very hard to believe Oxy admins would have allowed the football program to have deteriorated to that point if they had workable alternatives….

“A decision of this magnitude was not made lightly,” university President Jonathan Veitch said in a statement. There’s gravitas for you.

Sorry, Occidental College is in SCIAC, not SIAC….
