A headline that made UD laugh.

I know it’s not supposed to make you laugh, but it makes it sound as though you turn to it only when the utilities fail.

SHORT OF ELECTRICITY, FOOD, AND WATER, VENEZUELANS TURN TO RELIGION

************

Americans? Not so much.

  1. David Foster Says:

“No religion” and “not a member of any organized” religion are not synonymous. There are a lot of people who reject organized religion but do believe in various forms of mysticism, some of them pretty bizarre.

Plus, there are a lot of people whose political views are basically their religion, to the point where any questioning of them is blasphemy, which they would punish by burning at the stake if they could

David: Yes – good point. Sociologists call this large and growing group “unchurched independents.” But there are plenty of atheists as well – – even though, as your comment notes and as the Shermer piece I just linked to also notes, it’s devilishly difficult to use these terms cleanly. Many people are just confused; they might well say “atheist” and then turn out to believe non-atheist stuff. But the secular trend in America is undeniable.
