‘“She’s a real intellectual,” said Barry Lynn, executive director of the Open Markets Institute, who has worked with Warren and her team on their anti-trust tech proposals.’

The kiss of death for longtime UD favorite, Elizabeth Warren. It’s going to be close to impossible for her to dig herself out of the “she’s an intellectual” hole.

Perhaps so, although the real challenge to Educated People in Public Life is learning how not to be stupid about being smart. That generally means not coming off in a patronizing or condescending way.

  2. Margaret Soltan Says:

Stephen: But when people who are basically highly educated/brainy try to be non-condescending it can look like fake folksiness (see George Bush the Elder).

  3. Stephen Karlson Says:

Margaret, point taken, but isn’t that the Law of the Excluded Middle? There’s probably a job opportunity here for acting coaches, and any number of seekers of high office might benefit from such training.

  4. UD Says:

Stephen: Absolutely. Nothing wrong with a little coaching. I have special worries about Mayor Pete – multilingual son of a James Joyce scholar!

  5. theprofessor Says:

I haven’t been through Mayor Pete’s little hellhole for a few years, but without Notre Dame, IU-South Bend, and nearby Mishawaka propping it up, along with huge amounts of development money coming from hated Republican governors Daniels and Pence, it might give Gary some competition in the decay battle.
