I sometimes wonder if people flying that northern Virginia battle flag are being transgressive in the same way that cussing in the common room works among faculty. It has nothing to do with secesh sympathies and everything to do with provoking reactions among people easily provoked, including those GOPe types in the Lincoln Project.
Stephen: I do think that some of the flag-fliers are like the pre-teen kid in some little Virginia town who I saw hanging out looking mischievous at the local train station. “Whatcha up to?” I asked. “I’m out trying to be bad,” he answered. That is, I doubt a lot of it is even political. They’re just trying to be bad.
