This was indeed sad news. His 1980s visits behind the Iron Curtain were memorialized in “Ship of Fools” (Harper’s 1982, anthologized in Republican Party Reptile 1987) and “What Do They Do for Fun in Warsaw?” (Rolling Stone 1986, anthologized in Holidays in Hell 1988). Witty and perceptive.
