Above all, at no point during Carrie Cracknell’s directorial debut do you ever get the sense that anyone’s actually read Persuasion.

    I got as far as Anne holding up “the playlist he made me.” Ugh, no.

    LOL. I avoided it altogether. Although the version with Sally Hawkins is a little too arty for me (lots of weird visual choices), I like it. Hawkins is right for the part, and the handsome smoldering Wentworth is also well-cast.

    That’s my favorite version, although the way Sally Hawkins keeps her mouth open all the time really bothers me. Like she’s permanently taken aback or surprised? No way that would have been socially acceptable back then. Not ladylike at all. Once I noticed it, I couldn’t stop seeing it.
